Jared Young Injury Update, Latest on Mets 1B's Status After Hospitalization for Collision

New York Mets first baseman Jared Young left the team's matchup with the Philadelphia Phillies on a stretcher after colliding with starting pitcher Nolan McLean on Thursday.

He was later transported to the hospital for further examination, the Mets announced.

Mets interim manager Andy Green told reporters Friday that Young is doing "as good as expected or could be hoped for." All the tests he underwent went well, though he has short-term memory loss and bad headaches.

In the top of the sixth inning, Phillies outfielder Justin Crawford hit a ground ball towards first base.

As McLean ran to first to field the ball, his leg appeared to collide with Young's head as he was simultaneously leaning down to pick up the ball.

Young was replaced by Mark Vientos in New York's lineup after exiting the contest.

While the Mets have failed to meet expectations this season and sit at the bottom of the National League East standings with a 69-83 record, the play of Young has been a silver lining for the team.

Although he was initially brought in by New York as a depth piece in 2024 and played just 44 total MLB games heading into this year, he was suiting up in his 103rd appearance of the season on Thursday.

Young has racked up nine home runs, 17 doubles and 39 RBI while slashing .266/.330/.429 in 2026.

He's particularly excelled against right-handed pitching, owning a .797 OPS in 250 at-bats against right-handers this season.

Young recently received praise from Mets director of hitting Jeff Albert for his efforts.

"He's been great," Albert said regarding Young, per Tim Britton and Will Sammon of The Athletic. "I can't say enough good things about what he's done in the box, defense, in the cage, in the room. Just really a pro all the way around. It's great to see him take advantage of the opportunity. The guys that know him, I don't think it's surprising."

As the Mets continue to navigate through their 2026 campaign, the health of Young will be something to monitor moving forward.
