Western and Southern Open 2015: Monday Tennis Scores, Results, Latest Schedule

Joseph ZuckerAug 17, 2015

The Western and Southern Open in Cincinnati is one of the bigger stops on the road to the U.S. Open. Although Monday only served to kick off the main draw of the marquee event, Venus Williams, Gael Monfils, Grigor Dimitrov and Garbine Muguruza were among those in action.

Monday wasn't a great day to be a seeded player, either, as a number of ranked players all fell shortly after their tournaments began.

Here's a quick look at how the first round unfolded.

Monday Recap

Muguruza had to like her chances of reaching the second round after she learned her opponent on Monday would be Yaroslava Shvedova. The two had faced off in 2014, with Muguruza winning 6-2, 6-3.

But it's Shvedova who will be moving on in the tournament after she upset the ninth seed in straight sets, 6-4, 7-6.

The 27-year-old found herself in trouble on multiple occasions but somehow danced out of danger nearly every time. Generally, when you see a player having to save 10 break points, it's not a good sign for their chances of winning. Muguruza had 10 chances to break Shvedova's serve, but she could only capitalize on one of them.

It was a great rear-guard effort from Shvedova.

Meanwhile, the New York Times' Ben Rothenberg sees the defeat as another troubling sign for Muguruza:

Muguruza is running out of time to stem the tide before she heads to Flushing Meadows.

Williams, who fell to Sabine Lisicki in the first round in Toronto, was another star looking to rebound from the Rogers Cup.

The seven-time major champion received all she could handle from Zarina Diyas, eventually prevailing 7-6(6), 6-4.

"My opponent played so well today," she said after the win, per WTATennis.com. "She wasn't missing many shots, and I missed a lot, but I just tried to hang in there. In the end I was just trying to put the ball in the court. It didn't always work, but there are days you just have to fight a little harder. I give my opponent credit. She was so determined out there."

In a match were the margins were so slim, Diyas' second serve did her no favors. Over the course of the two sets, she won just eight of her 25 second-service points. When facing an opponent as talented as Williams, that's not going to cut it.

Over on the men's side, 10th-seeded Gilles Simon was the most notable casualty. He couldn't handle the heavy serving Ivo Karlovic, who collected an unfathomable 35 aces and won 80 percent of his first-service points.

It should then come as no surprise Karlovic saved all 10 of Simon's break-point opportunities.

The 36-year-old Croatian gets Martin Klizan in the second round, and a potential date with Stan Wawrinka looms large in the third round. Wawrinka has won four of the five meetings between the two, but you never count out Karlovic when he's serving like this.

Simon's fellow Frenchman, Monfils, didn't fare any better, losing 4-6, 5-7.

Calling the match for the Tennis Channel, Tracy Austin didn't hold back decrying what she perceived to be a lack of effort from Monfils.

"To not give 100 percent and be so blatant about it, I think it's disrespectful," she said, per Reuters' Andrew Both. "It looked like exhibition tennis. We've seen that way too many times with him. With Gael it's so difficult to watch because you know his upside ceiling could be so big but he just goes away and doesn't even try."

The same general sentiment has often been said of Monfils his entire career. Few players possess his blend of speed and power, and he seemingly could've been one of the best in the world. Fans patiently waited for Monfils' breakout season, but it hasn't come, and at 28 years old, it's unlikely to ever come for the 2008 French Open semifinalist.

Looking ahead to Tuesday, the more interesting matchups include Williams vs. Ana Ivanovic, Jo-Wilfried Tsonga vs. Fernando Verdasco, John Isner vs. Sam Querrey and Angelique Kerber vs. Belinda Bencic.

It should be another great day of tennis in southern Ohio.
