Chris Johnson's Titans Ring of Honor Ceremony Postponed Due to 'Unforeseen Circumstances'

The Tennessee Titans' ceremony to induct former running back Chris Johnson into the team's Ring of Honor has been postponed.

"Due to unforeseen circumstances, Chris Johnson and his family are no longer able to travel to Nashville for this Sunday's game," the Titans said in a statement released Friday. "Knowing how much he and his family desire to be in person at Nissan Stadium for his induction into the Titans Ring of Honor, we will postpone the official induction ceremony and look forward to celebrating the moment with them at a future date. Sunday's halftime ceremony will remain dedicated to celebrating Chris' incredible on-field achievements and legacy with our team. Our thoughts, along with those of Titans fans everywhere, continue to be with Chris and his wife, Brittany."

The ceremony was initially scheduled to take place during halftime of Tennessee's Week 1 clash with the New York Jets on Sunday.

Johnson previously announced that he had been diagnosed with ALS on June 29.

In an interview with Good Morning America's Michael Strahan, he revealed that he was diagnosed with the disease in 2025.

"I want people to understand just how quickly ALS can attack your body," Johnson told Strahan. "Just over a year ago, I was picking up my 7-year-old daughter so she'd make a wish with her birthday cake. Today, I couldn't do that."

Tennessee eventually announced plans to induct Johnson into the team's Ring of Honor on July 17.

"Chris Johnson holds a special place in the hearts of our organization and our fans," Titans controlling owner Amy Adams Strunk said as part of the announcement. "His stats speak for themselves, and he will forever remain a leader in our record books, but the man behind the yardage deserves just as much celebration."

Johnson played 10 seasons in the NFL from 2008-17, with his first six occurring as a member of the Titans.

He surpassed 1,000 rushing yards in each year that he spent with Tennessee, including a 2009 campaign in which he picked up a league-leading 2,006 yards on the ground. Johnson is one of just nine running backs in NFL history to rush for at least 2,000 yards in a single season.

He amassed 7,965 rushing yards and 50 rushing touchdowns during his overall tenure on the Titans, with both totals ranking No. 4 on the team's all-time leaderboards.

Now, Johnson's Ring of Honor induction ceremony will take place later in the 2026 season.
