The NFL is back! The start of the 2026 regular season is now only hours away and will officially commence when the Seattle Seahawks and New England Patriots clash on Wednesday evening.

For many fans, this means it's time to dive into season-long fantasy leagues, DFS games, prop bets, and survivor leagues.

Unfortunately, Week 1 can be extremely difficult for survivor players, as we simply don't know which teams are poised for a breakout or a regression. Sloppy play is often a hallmark of Week 1, too, which can lead to some very unexpected outcomes.

Let's not forget that the Las Vegas Raiders knocked off the New England Patriots in Week 1 last season.

General Survivor Tips for Week 1

If you're a veteran of survivor leagues, you already know what to expect. For the uninitiated, here's a quick rundown.

Survivor pools typically require players to pick one team each week to win. If their selected squad loses, they're out. The caveat is that teams can generally only be picked once, which means simply picking the elite teams week in and week out isn't a viable strategy.

On the plus side, players only need to pick 18 teams to make it through the regular season, so flat-out bad franchises can be avoided more often than not. Of course, at this point in the season, we don't know who those teams truly are.

In Week 1, knowing which matchups to avoid entirely can be the key to survival. Players should generally stay away from divisional matchups, especially those in a prime-time window, as they often yield unexpected results.

The Los Angeles Rams, for example, are 3.5-point favorites over the rival San Francisco 49ers. While Los Angeles is a clear Super Bowl favorite and the better team on paper, it's hard to trust them against a familiar opponent on a Thursday night in Australia.

Waiting for the Rams' home opener against the New York Giants in Week 2 would be wise.

Similarly, the Denver Broncos should be able to handle the Kansas City Chiefs in Patrick Mahomes' first game back from a torn ACL. Winning in Aarrowhead on a Monday night will be tough, though, which is why Denver is actually a 2.5-point underdog.

Players should also be wary of games that involve multiple unknowns. The Tennessee Titans and New York Jets, for example, were both bad in 2025, but it's hard to know what to expect from either team in their Week 1 matchup. The Titans have a new head coach and several new players, while the Jets have a new quarterback and an upgraded offensive cast.

Trust the Chargers versus the Cardinals

The Arizona Cardinals are bringing their fair share of variables to Week 1. They have a new head coach in Mike LaFleur and added a potential star running back in Jeremiyah Love—though Love has been dealing with an ankle sprain.

However, we should know what to expect from the Los Angeles Chargers, who will host Arizona in their opener.

Los Angeles has a terrific defense, which ranked fifth overall last season, and a potentially potent offense led by Justin Herbert, Ladd McConkey, Omarion Hampton, and Quenton Johnston. With tackles Joe Alt and Rashawn Slater again healthy, L.A.'s offense is poised to make a jump under new coordinator Mike McDaniel.

The Chargers are also likely to be very well prepared for Week 1, as Jim Harbaugh is one of the most buttoned-up coaches in the league. While other squads may be a bit shaky coming out of the preseason, the Chargers shouldn't be.

Los Angeles doesn't provide an overwhelming home-field advantage, but the Chargers are 9.5-point favorites for a reason. They're the better team by a considerable margin, and they should show that in Week 1.

Consider the Raiders Versus the Dolphins

Players looking to stick with "safe" picks in Week 1 should also consider the Detroit Lions (-6.5) against the New Orleans Saints or the Jacksonville Jaguars (-8.5) against the Cleveland Browns.

Those willing to gamble a bit right away should consider the Las Vegas Raiders (-3.5) against the Miami Dolphins.

Both teams are rebuilding in 2026, but it's easier to see the 2026 vision for Las Vegas than for Miami. The Raiders should be better right away, thanks to new pieces like head coach Klint Kubiak, quarterback Kirk Cousins, and center Tyler Linderbaum.

Las Vegas doesn't have a great roster overall, but it has some legitimate star power in players like Brock Bowers and Maxx Crosby. The Dolphins have a star running back in De'Von Achane, a potential star in quarterback Malik Willis, and not much else.

There's a reason why the Dolphins claimed a whopping seven players off waivers during cuts. Their roster is largely devoid of talent, and it's likely to struggle on the road in Las Vegas.
