Carlos Alcaraz overcame early challenges to defeat Jamie Faria in convincing fashion.

In the opening set, the seven-time major champion struggled with Faria's powerful first serve, winning just 4 of 21 points.

However, Faria's level dipped noticeably in the second set as Alcaraz found his form, taking the set 6-0.

From that moment on, Alcaraz took complete control of the match.

It was another encouraging result for the defending champion, who entered this week with question marks after missing the previous four months with a wrist injury.

Ben Shelton delivered an epic performance at Arthur Ashe Stadium on Wednesday, defeating Hubert Hurkacz in four sets to move on to the third round.

The 23-year-old dictated most of the match from his first serve, winning 73 percent of points.

Although Hurkacz won the second set and kept the match competitive with his powerful serve, Shelton's return game and physicality ultimately made the difference.

The 23-year-old won 45 percent of return points on Hurkacz's second serve while hitting 44 winners.

The second round of the US Open will continue Thursday on ESPN, with all matches also being available on ESPN Unlimited.

However, he faces a tough challenge in Learner Tien, who is 20 years his junior.

Like Monfils, Tien is a true warrior, using grit and athleticism to wear down his opponents.
