Shedeur Sanders, Dillon Gabriel Trade Buzz Updated in New NFL Rumors After Browns Set 53-Man Roster
The Cleveland Browns set their 53-man roster on Sunday, and to the surprise of many, they kept all four of their quarterbacks.
But there's a world in which Dillon Gabriel or Shedeur Sanders isn't with the team by the end of the season.
According to Fox Sports' Eric Williams, one scout said the Browns could be keeping Gabriel around in hopes of trading him for draft compensation, as they did with Joe Flacco and Kenny Pickett in 2025.
Another scenario could see Gabriel take over the No. 2 spot, with Sanders hitting the trade block.
"It will be interesting how it unfolds," the NFL scout told Williams. "From the outside, you'd want to go with experience and leadership at QB over everything else at this point. But I think Gabriel has a chance to be a good backup and liked him coming out.
"All eyes are on Sanders, but he's gotta show he can be a solid, strong leader and settle down as well to grind, learn and develop. He's going to find out that as a player, you can only get so many opportunities to do that, and you better take advantage of every single one of them."
Gabriel appeared in 10 games for the Browns last year and threw for 937 yards, seven touchdowns and two interceptions. When he suffered a concussion in November, Sanders replaced him and eventually closed out the season as the starter.
Sanders finished the 2025 campaign with 1,400 yards, seven touchdowns and 10 interceptions in eight games.
Sanders spent the offseason competing with Deshaun Watson for the starting job before eventually losing the battle to the veteran. Gabriel's performance in the final preseason game perhaps boosted his status, though, as he threw for 186 yards and three touchdowns on 12-of-15 passing.
Whatever direction the Browns decide to take with their quarterback room could take a while to materialize, though, since Gabriel is starting the year on the injured reserve after suffering a back injury.
