Brian Cashman Addresses Yankees Contract and Future amid MLB World Series Pursuit

New York Yankees longtime general manager Brian Cashman's contract is set to end after the 2026 season, but he's not worried about his future.

The Athletic's Ian O'Connor reported that Cashman "is expected to sign yet another deal" with the Yankees after this year, and the GM chose not to address his contract status while speaking to reporters on Sunday.

"I like how Jazz (Chisholm Jr.) answered it. He's a free agent at the end of the year too, and he just said he wants to win the World Series and nothing else really matters," Cashman said. "My contract is for another day. It's not something I control or am thinking about. I'm very honored to be a part of this franchise as long as I have, but right now all I'm focused on is figuring out how to win this thing."

The Yankees won three out of four games against the Boston Red Sox this past weekend to improve to 78-59, 4.5 games behind the Tampa Bay Rays (82-54) for first place in the AL East. With 25 games remaining in the regular season, Cashman admitted, "We are not where we want to be. We want to try to win the division. … When the dust settles, that's our first goal."

It's been 17 seasons since the Yankees won their last World Series title in 2009. New York is still hoping that star slugger Aaron Judge will be able to get back to his old self following his rib injury, and O'Connor noted that he's expected "to return in the coming weeks."

"I'll sign up for whenever he's ready, and what that date happens to be is yet to be determined," Cashman said of Judge. "I'll sign up for making sure we get him back and he's fully capable and prepared for what comes next, which is obviously going to be a grind. He's going to step into a fast-moving, fast-paced game, but he knows what he's getting into."

Cashman was also asked if he feels the team is good enough to win the World Series this year, and he expressed confidence while acknowledging that it won't be easy.

"I think we have the talent to do that," he responded. "I've seen teams that are world-championship caliber not make it, not just us but elsewhere, and I've seen teams that didn't look World Series capable all of a sudden get hot and run the table. It works a lot of different ways. It's a whole different resetting of the clock for all teams that qualify for the postseason."
