Djokovic Upset by Navone in Historic Loss, Updated US Open Men's Tennis Bracket After Sunday Results

Novak Djokovic's time at the U.S. Open didn't last long.

The four-time winner of the event suffered a stunning loss in the first round on Sunday against Mariano Navone, falling 6-7, 7-5, 6-4, 2-6, 1-6 in a marathon match that lasted about 4.5 hours.

Coming into the night, Djokovic had won 78 straight first-round matches at the Grand Slams, last dropping one at the 2006 Australian Open.

But he didn't win a major this season, marking the second straight year he's failed to do so after six straight years with at least one Grand Slam conquest. In fact, dating back to 2011 Djokovic has only had three seasons without a Grand Slam title (2017, 2025, 2026).

Age comes for us all. Djokovic is now 39 and his greatest rivals, Roger Federer and Rafael Nadal, have already retired. On Sunday, his body seemed to betray him and he even vomited multiple times.

Djokovic was the No. 4 seed coming into the U.S. Open, and with no Jannik Sinner at the event, the 24-time major winner seemed to have a legitimate shot. But it simply wasn't to be.

Top-seeded Alexander Zverev and defending U.S. Open champion Carlos Alcaraz remain the frontrunners. But one of the legends of the sport is now out of the running.

Navone will now face the winner of the Matteo Berrettini-Stan Wawrinka match in the second round of the bracket.
