Novak Djokovic's Open Era record of 78 consecutive first-round wins at Grand Slam tournaments came to a stunning end on Sunday.

In his Arthur Ashe stadium debut, Mariano Navone upset the 39-year-old Serbian in five sets, postponing Djokovic's pursuit of a record-breaking 25th major title until 2027.

Djokovic looked in control early but began to struggle with illness, ultimately dropping a tight first-set tiebreaker.

Though he continued to battle fitness issues in the second set, Djokovic relied on his trademark defense to level the match.

He carried that momentum into the third set, once again using his grit and defensive skills to take the lead, even as he vomited for the second time in the match.

However, cramps soon followed, and the 39-year-old lacked the stamina to keep pace with the fresher Navone.

In the fourth set, Navone's superior fitness and form proved to be the decisive factors.

In the fifth set, Navone was in complete control, as Djokovic managed to win just one game.

Djokovic's loss opens up an opportunity for several players in a tournament that is already without Jannik Sinner and a less-than-100-percent Carlos Alcaraz.

The first round of the US Open will continue Monday on ESPN, with all matches also being available on ESPN Unlimited.
