Ex-Grocery Driver Joe Dean, with Wife as Caddie, Wins British Masters for 1st European Tour Title

An unlikely champion emerged during Sunday's final round of the 2026 British Masters.

Joe Dean, who entered the tournament ranked No. 292 and not that far removed from being a grocery delivery driver, shot a stunning nine-under 63 to beat the rest of the field by three strokes, per the Associated Press.

His wife, Emily, was on the bag as his caddie as he overcame a seven-stroke deficit at the start of the final round.

"I can't thank her enough for what she has to put up with, with me," Dean said. "It was bad enough off the course, with the lows and stuff. Now it's on and off the course. I hope I made her proud."

As the AP noted, he delivered groceries during the COVID-19 pandemic in 2020 and continued doing so for approximately four years in an effort to fund his golf career without a card.

Sunday came Dean's biggest professional triumph, as he shot a nine-under 63 behind birdies on four of his final six holes to end the tournament at 14-under and three strokes ahead of a four-way tie for second place.

Nacho Elvira, Daniel Hillier, Niklas Norgaard and Jakob Skov Olesen all tied for second.

The British Masters is the first tournament in the qualifying process for the 2027 Ryder Cup for Team Europe. While making that roster still feels like a long shot given Dean's overall ranking, it is nearly impossible to make a better first impression than he did Sunday.

The match days for the next Ryder Cup take place from Sept. 17-19, 2027, at Adare Manor in Ireland.
