George Lombard Jr. Injured, Latest News on Yankees Rookie's Status After Exiting vs. Red Sox

New York Yankees rookie George Lombard Jr. left a matchup with the Boston Red Sox due to right knee discomfort, the team announced Saturday.

Lombard is set to undergo imaging on Saturday night.

He appeared to suffer the injury while he checked his swing during an at-bat in the second inning of the game.

Lombard went 1-for-2 with a single prior to exiting the contest.

The 21-year-old was appearing in his 23rd career game after the Yankees called him up on Aug. 4. He's listed as New York's No. 1 prospect as well as the No. 14 overall prospect among all teams, per MLB Pipeline.

While Lombard has dealt with some recent defensive struggles at shortstop, he's still had several impressive moments at the plate during his time in New York.

He's currently hitting .253 with one double, one triple, two home runs and six RBI.

Prior to getting called up, Lombard amassed six homers and 16 doubles while posting an .845 OPS in 56 games with Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre.

The Yankees will hope that Lombard's injury isn't too serious, as they're currently battling for positioning in the American League postseason picture. New York sits at No. 2 in the AL East standings with a 76-59 record, although the team holds the No. 1 AL Wild Card spot.

José Caballero replaced Lombard at shortstop on Saturday and could receive more opportunities to play if the rookie is forced to miss time.
