Tom Cruise Announces 'Days of Thunder' Sequel With Anne Hathaway in Photo, Reveals Release Date

The Days of Thunder sequel now has a release date and co-star opposite Tom Cruise.

Cruise announced on Saturday that Anne Hathaway is joining the film that will be released in the summer of 2028.

Per Variety's Matt Donnelly, Paramount has set the official release date for June 2, 2028.

Plot details are unknown at this point, but Donnelly noted Hathaway's character is going to play a racecar team owner and an engineer.

Cruise had been in talks to reprise his role as Cole Trickle in a sequel to the 1990 film dating back to 2024. There were no other members of the creative team in place at that point.

Tony Scott, who directed the original, died in 2012. His collaboration with Cruise on Days of Thunder came after the two worked together on the first Top Gun film.

In July, Borys Kit of The Hollywood Reporter reported Jonathan Levine was in negotiations to direct Days of Thunder 2 from a script being written by Will Staples.

Staples' writing credits include Without Remorse, the 2021 film starring Michael B. Jordan. He is also listed on IMDB as having done uncredited script revisions for Mission: Impossible — Rogue Nation starring Cruise.

Levine is best known for primarily directing comedies, but his next film is the biopic Mr. Irrelevant: The John Tuggle Story that is scheduled to be released on Christmas Day.

The original Days of Thunder made $157.9 million worldwide. The sequel will be his first franchise movie since Mission: Impossible – The Final Reckoning in 2025. His next project is Digger that is set to be released on Oct. 2.
