Ty Simpson Impresses, Final Box Score Player Stats & Highlights from Rams vs. Chargers

Making his first start in the Los Angeles Rams' preseason finale, Ty Simpson turned in another efficient game to lead a 20-18 victory over the Los Angeles Chargers on Thursday night.

Simpson played the entire first half and led two scoring drives, including connecting with Brennan Presley for a touchdown early in the second quarter.

Simpson's touchdown pass came out of structure on a blitz from the Chargers that forced him to roll to his left and throw a strike back across his body to Presley.

In three games this preseason, Simpson finished 47-of-60 for 382 yards, three touchdowns and no interceptions.

With the Rams resting all of their regular starters and some key backups, including Stetson Bennett, head coach Sean McVay gave Simpson a lot of runway as he prepares for his rookie season.

Unlike the Rams, Chargers head coach Jim Harbaugh used most of his starters for the first two series of the game on both sides of the ball. Simpson was able to get three points out of that, though it comes with a caveat because the Rams recovered a Justin Herbert fumble at the Chargers' 20-yard line.

Four of Simpson's five drives produced at least one first down. His best drive was a 17-play, 79-yard possession to end the first quarter that didn't lead to any points because the Chargers defense stuffed Jordan Waters on fourth-and-goal from the one.

Speaking to Darren Haynes of CBS LA after the win, Simpson expressed happiness with how he has progressed throughout training camp and the preseason while acknowledging there's still a lot of room for growth.

The Rams pulled one of the biggest shockers of the 2026 draft by taking Simpson with the No. 13 overall pick. He is not expected to play this season as long as Matthew Stafford, coming off an MVP in 2025, can remain healthy.

In the event Simpson does get called into action, though, his play in the preseason combined with McVay's scheme and the offensive talent around him suggests the Rams can still play at a high level.
