PGA Championship 2015 Results: Twitter Reacts to Final Leaderboard and Standings

Steve SilvermanAug 16, 2015

As the years go by, it will look like Jason Day recorded a relatively easy victory in the 2015 PGA Championship at Whistling Straits in Kohler, Wisconsin.

After all, he won the tournament with a 20-under par score of 268, three better than runner-up Jordan Spieth. When Day walked up to the 18th green on Sunday, his victory was a certainty.

But as Day approached his final putt, his eyes were brimming with tears and his cheeks were several shades of red. That's because the victory was anything but easy.

Day had been Mr. Close, but No Cigar throughout much of his career when it came to major championships. He had nine top-10 finishes in his previous 19 majors, but no victories.

"I didn't expect that I was gonna cry," Day said. "A lot of emotion has come out because I've been so close so many times."

But Day has his reward. Not only does he have the Wanamaker Trophy as the champion of the 97th PGA Championship, but he also set the record for the lowest cumulative score in a major.

Previously, Tiger Woods held the record when he scored 19-under at the 2000 British Open. Day became the first golfer to finish with a score of 20-under in the 156-year history of major championship golf.

While Spieth was unable to win his third major championship of the year, his second-place finish allowed him to claim the No. 1 spot in the world rankings.
