After Shedeur Loses QB1 Job, Deion Sanders Drops Motivational Quote About 'Yesterday'

On Monday, the Cleveland Browns named Deshaun Watson their starting quarterback over Shedeur Sanders, who will take the backup role.

One day later, Sanders' father, Colorado football coach and Pro Football Hall of Famer Deion Sanders, dropped a post on social media urging people not to dwell on the past.

It's unclear whether the post was in response to Sanders being named QB2, a general inspirational remark or a bit of both. Regardless, Shedeur is the backup for now, but head coach Todd Monken raved about Sanders' professional response after being told the news (h/t Irie Harris of cleveland.com).

"He was awesome. I mean, you talk about somebody that really understands the long game. That really, I think, has come to understand the long game. What are we really in this for? What am I in it for? To have the Browns be an organization that people aspire to be, right? The long game, right? Where do we want to be in the long term? He understands that as well as a quarterback. Where he was at, where he's at now, where he wants to get to. That is what's so awesome about Shedeur understanding that. Really, he does. We met this morning for a good long time, and all he had was a smile on his face because he understands what's really in front of him, not really a short-term, more of a long-term decision. I mean, this is a player who's going to work his butt off to get better, and he already has."

Sanders, who was the Browns' starter for the final seven games last season during his rookie year, will be QB2 when Cleveland opens 2026 on Sunday, Sept. 13 at the Jacksonville Jaguars. That certainly doesn't mean he'll be the backup forever, though, as the door can open down the road.
