New Steelers Rumors on Joey Porter Jr.'s Contract amid NFL Trade Buzz and Mike McCarthy's Comments

As the start of the 2026 NFL season draws nearer, the Pittsburgh Steelers are still struggling to keep one of their key defensive players happy.

Steelers head coach Mike McCarthy told reporters on Monday that the team is at an "impasse" in contract negotiations with cornerback Joey Porter Jr., and ESPN's Brooke Pryor reported that sources said that "there hasn't been any meaningful progress in extension talks." A source also told Pryor that the Steelers "haven't made or received any trade calls on Porter."

Porter is entering the final year of his rookie contract after being selected by the Steelers in the second round of the 2023 NFL draft. He reportedly aggravated a back injury during a mobility workout on the first day of training camp and was placed on the physically unable to perform list.

When asked about a potential timeline for Porter's return to the field ahead of Pittsburgh's Week 1 matchup against the Atlanta Falcons, McCarthy candidly admitted that his contract situation makes it tough to predict when things will be resolved.

"I learned this in my early years as a head coach, you have to separate the business and football," McCarthy said. "Sometimes it's easier in others. This is a challenge for both Joey and us because we're first-year staff. We've seen them play, compete against Joey. I would love the opportunity to coach Joey Porter. I know our defensive guys would love the opportunity. So we're at an impasse right here, and you got to respect that. Every one of us has a contract. The organization, they have beliefs and so forth. But yeah, that's just kind of where we are."

Despite Porter's injury and contract dispute, he's remained professional. Pryor noted that he's been present at training camp practices, usually watching from the sidelines. Defensive coordinator Patrick Graham also said the 26-year-old has been "engaged" in the classroom during his stint on the PUP list.

Still, it's safe to say that the Steelers would prefer to keep Porter happy and healthy as they try to chase a playoff spot during the upcoming season.
