Mike Vrabel Addresses 'Issues' with Patriots Front Office After Calling Out Roster Depth

After surprisingly declaring that the New England Patriots are lacking depth entering the 2026 season, head coach Mike Vrabel clarified that there isn't a disconnect between him and the team's front office.

"These aren't issues. I'm not in a subtle context -- that wasn't that," Vrabel said Monday in his weekly appearance on sports radio WEEI, per ESPN's Mike Reiss. "They asked why we didn't play the guys, and [the answer is] we have to have everybody we have available and then continue to develop and see some guys that went out and played like they did on Saturday night to build that depth."

The concerns over Vrabel's relationship with New England's front office arose when the second-year coach candidly admitted that he held the defending AFC champion's starters out of the first two preseason games because he isn't confident in the depth of the roster.

"I do not think we have a very deep team, so I think we have to make sure that we are preparing our football team and that we are doing everything that we can to keep our best players available," he said after Saturday's 24-21 preseason win over the Philadelphia Eagles, per Reiss.

On Monday, Vrabel made it clear that he was not attempting to send a message or shift blame to anyone else in the organization, as he has been part of key roster decisions since taking over as head coach last year.

"We are the front office. We are all making the decisions. We're all included in this. It was about the young guys we have to develop," Vrabel said. "You can see that the players we kept out of the game, those are the guys. And we have to be able to find some guys behind them to be backups, to be the first guy in … those are the things that we are trying to develop and I guess that's what I was referencing."

The Patriots are hoping to contend for a second straight trip to the Super Bowl, but Vrabel's comments indicate that they may not be worthy of being projected among the elite teams in the NFL this season.
