The Seattle Mariners will be without utilityman Brendan Donovan in the immediate future after he was hit in the head by a pitch in the batting cages ahead of Saturday's game against the Chicago Cubs.

Andrew Destin of the Associated Press reported Seattle placed Donovan on the seven-day concussion injured list Sunday.

"It was just one of those situations that's unfortunate," Mariners manager Dan Wilson said. "But he will be back hopefully as soon as possible."

Seattle scratched Donovan from its lineup Saturday and recalled Patrick Wisdom from Triple-A Tacoma to replace him on the roster.

It is another setback for the utilityman, who came to the Mariners via a three-team trade with the St. Louis Cardinals and Tampa Bay Rays during the offseason. Yet he dealt with groin issues early in the season and has played just 39 games.

He is slashing .277/.371/.409 with three home runs and 15 RBI in those contests.

Despite the late scratch for Donovan, the Mariners still beat the Cubs on Saturday and have a chance to finish the three-game sweep Sunday.

They are still six games under .500 at 62-68 but just three games back of the first-place Houston Astros in the American League West.
