Shedeur Sanders Admits He Forgot About Coin Toss as Captain for Browns-Bills, 'A Laughing Moment'

Cleveland Browns quarterback Shedeur Sanders admitted he didn't know his appointment as game captain indicated he was meant to be involved in the coin toss ahead of Saturday's preseason matchup against the Buffalo Bills.

"Pretty good day. But I messed up before I got on the field," Sanders said during a mid-game sideline interview. "I didn't go out for the coin toss.

"I knew I was the captain, but I just thought I was like the captain of the team for the week. I didn't know I was captain of the coin toss. It was a laughing moment with Coach Monken and everybody... I'm happy I got that out of the way."

Sanders, who is competing with Deshaun Watson for the Browns' QB1 position, made his first start of the preseason Saturday against the Bills.

He went 9-for-11 with 74 passing yards, one touchdown and one interception. Coach Todd Monken said after the game he'd been impressed by Sanders' command of the huddle.

Monken, who has previously indicated he plans to name a starter early next week, said Saturday he would wait to make any further decisions until he can watch tape from the Bills game.

Sanders will hope his play outweighs his pregame gaffe if Monken ultimately names a starting quarterback ahead of the Browns' preseason finale Thursday against the New England Patriots.
