Don King Files Lawsuit to Prevent Shane Mosley vs. Ricardo Mayorga Rematch

Joseph ZuckerAug 14, 2015

Don King has built his career on facilitating a number of marquee boxing attractions, but the 83-year-old is trying his hardest to prevent one—specifically, the rematch between Shane Mosley and Ricardo Mayorga.

According to BoxingScene.com's Rick Reeno, King is suing Mosley, Mayorga and their two promotions in a Miami District Court to stop the Aug. 29 bout from happening:

"

King claims Mayorga is still under a promotional agreement which the boxer signed in 2009. Mayorga walked away from boxing after getting knocked out by Miguel Cotto in 2009, and decided to return to the ring in 2014.

According to the legal documents [with exhibits], Mayorga signed a Memorandum of Understanding in 2014, to reaffirm that King's promotional contact is still valid.

However, Mosley's legal team are disputing the lawsuit and King's move for an emergency order to prevent the Mayorga rematch.

King used a similar tactic in May 2010 to force the cancellation of a mixed martial arts clash between Mayorga and Din Thomas under the Shine Fights umbrella. The circumstances were slightly different, with King's bone of contention being the promotion of Mayorga as an MMA fighter rather than a boxer.

Mosley and Mayorga last met on Sept. 27, 2008. Mosley famously won with a knockout one second from the final bell in the 12th round. The outcome belied the true nature of the fight, but plenty of fans are likely looking forward to their second battle.

Cancelling the rematch with less than a month to go would cause serious problems for those fans who purchased tickets.
