What appeared to be a go-ahead home run for Pete Alonso in the seventh inning of Wednesday's contest between the Baltimore Orioles and New York Yankees was ruled a foul ball.

Alonso hit a towering shot towards the left-field foul pole, and it appeared to being fair, but the umpires on the field said it was foul. The call stood after replay review.

"After viewing all relevant angles, the Replay Official could not definitively determine that the ball left the playing field in fair territory," MLB's Replay Center said in a statement, per Paul Mancano of the Baltimore Banner. "The call stands, and it is a foul ball."

The Orioles and Yankees were tied in the bottom of the seventh when Alonso appeared to have given his team the lead. Instead, he ended up striking out, and Baltimore went down in order.

New York then took the lead in the top of the eighth when George Lombard Jr. hit an RBI single and Jazz Chisholm scored from third on a wild pitch. The Orioles couldn't answer, and the Yankees hung on to win 5-3, taking the second game of the three-game series.

It marked the third consecutive loss for a Baltimore team still battling to get into playoff position.

The Orioles are currently sitting in fifth place in the AL East at 61-66 and are 1.5 games back in the wild-card race. According to FanGraphs, they have a 15.8 percent chance to reach the postseason.

While it isn't the entire reason Baltimore lost, the home run is what will be remembered from Wednesday's game.

The hit in the seventh might not have counted, but Alonso did pick up a homer in the third inning, marking his 30th of the season. He's now hit 30 or more home runs in each of the last six seasons.

The Orioles are likely frustrated with the call and the eventual result of the game, but at this point they'll look to move on and pick up a crucial division win on Thursday against the Yankees before another tough series against the Tampa Bay Rays this weekend.
