'Worst Football Experience I Have Had,' Former Jets Coach Rips NY's End to 3-14 NFL Season
After finishing 3-14 in their first year under head coach Aaron Glenn, the New York Jets unsurprisingly instituted mass changes across the board.
Glenn fired half of his coaching staff, including both offensive and defensive coordinators. It was a necessary move after the Jets became the first team in recorded NFL history to fail to record an interception for an entire season, as well as the first team in NFL history to lose five straight games by 23 or more points in a single season.
Some former members of Glenn's coaching staff are still trying to get over the abysmal year, as Jonathan Jones of The Athletic spoke to one fired assistant who didn't hold back while describing what they went through.
"Worst football experience I have had," the former coach said of that final stretch.
Glenn inherited a Jets roster that had been demoralized by the disappointments of previous years, and it was clear from the start that it would take more than one year to rebuild the culture of the franchise. New York started the season with seven straight losses, frequently showing a lack of poise in big moments.
While Glenn made substantial mistakes as a rookie head coach, he was further hamstrung when the Jets blew up their roster at the trade deadline by shipping away Pro Bowlers Sauce Gardner and Quinnen Williams. Star wide receiver Garrett Wilson was also limited to seven games due to a knee injury, leaving New York devoid of talent as it played out the remainder of the year.
It's understandable that some former Jets coaches still have a bad taste in their mouths, but Jones spoke to others who were more forgiving of Glenn's disastrous first year at the helm.
"The team that A.G. took over, they were a five-win team, and we got rid of all the best players," another former coach said. "I'm not saying those weren't the right decisions. You had an old roster, but you've got to be realistic and live with the consequences. He had a good plan as a first-year head coach. There were a lot of other factors. I don't have anything against A.G. I think he was stuck in a tough situation."
