Packers' Matt LaFleur Claps Back at Keisean Nixon's Comments About Competing for Starting Job

Joseph ZuckerAug 18, 2026

Green Bay Packers cornerback Keisean Nixonย might be squarely in the doghouse with the start of the 2026 NFL regular season less than a month away.

Nixon suggested Sunday to reporters that he's "being punished right now" by virtue of having no assurances about a starting job in Week 1.

Coach Matt LaFleur responded Tuesday to say the two-time All-Pro "loves making a headline."

Nixon started all 17 games for Green Bay in 2025 and finished with one interception and 17 pass breakups. He was eventually named a Pro Bowler, replacing the Seattle Seahawks' Devon Witherspoon for the NFC.

Nixon's Pro Bowl nod may have obscured how he actually performed, though. According to Pro Football Reference, he gave up six touchdowns on 87 throws and allowed opposing quarterbacks to post a 105.1 passer rating.

One can understand the 29-year-old's surprise at potentially being demoted. At the same time, the coaching staff may not be wrong for looking at him so critically.

Nixon's public comments probably aren't doing him any favors.

"They ain't really told me nothing," he said of the Packers coaches. "Every day, I find out a different thing, and I just attack it. I don't care what it is, whether it's me taking reps on special teams, whatever it is. I attack it, though. I'm here. Can't really run me off, so I'm ready to play ball."

LaFleur has some options at corner after Green Bay signed Benjamin St-Juste and used a second-round pick on Brandon Cisse. You'd bet on Nixon claiming one of the starting spots, but he still may need to earn it in the eyes of the staff.
