Browns GM Addresses How Deshaun Watson's Contract Impacts Shedeur Sanders QB1 Battle

Andrew PetersAug 17, 2026

As the Cleveland Browns continue their quarterback competition between Deshaun Watson and Shedeur Sanders, it's fair to wonder whether Watson's contract could be a factor.

After all, Watson has a cap hit of $40.9 million, while Sanders is on a rookie deal that carries a cap hit of just $1.1 million.

But general manager Andrew Berry made it clear that the contract situation won't be a factor in the decision.

"It's a performance-based decision," Berry said on the Deebo & Joe podcast (22-minute mark). "The contract does not matter."

It's easy to think that there might be some pressure for the Browns to get their money's worth from Watson, but clearly, Berry and the front office are focused on which player gives them a better chance to win.

Watson played better than Sanders in the first preseason game, throwing for 126 on 11-of-15 passing while Sanders completed 6-of-11 passes for 79 yards.

"We're pleased with both guys. I think they both had a nice preseason, and they did some good things in the game this week," Berry said.

Watson perhaps has the upper hand after his performance over the weekend, but Sanders will look to improve his standing against the Buffalo Bills on Saturday.
