Bryce McKey, Maryland Women's Asst. Basketball Coach, Charged with Sexual Abuse
Maryland women’s assistant basketball coach Bryce McKey “has been charged with sexual abuse against a former player he coached while at Xavier,” according to Roman Stubbs of the Washington Post.
Gene Wang of the Washington Post reported on Aug. 14 that McKey resigned and has pleaded not guilty to the pending charges.
Stubbs added more context to the situation:
Jason Williams and Cameron Knight of Cincinnati.com reported McKey was accused of “inappropriately touching one of the players he coached at Xavier, according to court documents obtained.” The incident allegedly happened in his Northern Kentucky home.
Stubbs noted, “The incident allegedly occurred 10 days after Maryland announced the hiring of McKey as an assistant coach and shortly before he relocated to College Park.”
If McKey is ultimately convicted, he faces up to 90 days in jail and a $250 fine.
McKey also reportedly contacted the player “through a mutual friend and offered money in exchange for not pursuing charges,” per Williams and Knight.
McKey joined the Maryland staff this offseason. The team is coming off of a second straight Final Four appearance.
