USA Olympic Legend Katie Ledecky Loses 1st International Race 800m Freestyle, Lani Pallister Reacts

Katie Ledecky is untouchable in the 800-meter freestyle no more.

The four-time Olympic champion had to settle for silver in the Pan Pacific Championships on Saturday. It was her first-ever international defeat in the race.

Australia's Lani Pallister won with a time of 8:06.10, while Ledecky hit the wall in 8:07.26.

"I was just so locked in and I've been really focused on what I want," Pallister said of her triumph. "The 800 is my favorite event."

Ledecky was satisfied with her effort despite failing to come out on top.

"That was definitely my best swim of the week, so I'm actually pretty happy with it," she said. "If I was going to get second tonight, I wanted to make it a good one. Just wanted to make it hard for Lani."

Ledecky's last loss of any kind in the 800 meters came in a 2024 domestic event, with Summer McIntosh pulling off the upset.

Pallister cleaned up in Irvine, California, this weekend. She bested McIntosh in the 200-meter freestyle and edged out Ledecky in the 400 meters, adding another gold in the 4x200-meter team relay.

Ledecky did at least continue her dominance in 1,500 meters, with her winning streak sitting at 16 years and counting.

Pallister was a gold medalist in the 4x200-meter relay at the 2024 Olympics. Individually, she earned silver in the 800 meters at the 2025 World Aquatics Championships.

Saturday represented a major statement less than two years out from the 2028 Summer Games in Los Angeles.

Pallister said the world record in the 800 meters is "definitely a goal for the next two years" as well. She was just under two seconds from the mark (8:04.12) set by Ledecky in a 2025 race.
