Vladimir Guerrero Jr. Diagnosed with Concussion, Latest on Injury Return Timeline for Blue Jays

After leaving Friday's 3-1 win over the New York Yankees in the seventh inning, Toronto Blue Jays star Vladimir Guerrero Jr. has been placed on the seven-day concussion injured list.

The Blue Jays announced the move prior to Saturday's game with outfielder Daz Cameron being called up from Triple-A to fill Guerrero's spot on the 26-man roster.

The injury occurred in the bottom of the sixth through a wild sequence of events that started with no outs and runners on first and second.

George Springer hit a grounder to Yankees third baseman Ryan McMahon, who fielded the ball and stepped on the bag for one out. He attempted to turn a double play by throwing to first, but Luis Garcia Jr. was unable to pick the ball after it bounced on the dirt.

Guerrero started the play on first base and took off for third after the ball bounced away from Garcia, who picked it up and fired it back to third trying to get the force out, but McMahon was away from the bag and as he was moving toward it, he collided with Guerrero and the ball bounced away allowing Guerrero to score.

Charles McAdoo came out at the start of the seventh as a defensive replacement at first base for Guerrero.

Blue Jays manager John Schneider told reporters after the game that Guerrero had "a bit of a headache" and he would undergo testing.

"Full concussion testing," Schneider said, "and you've always got to be careful. We'll see how he wakes up tomorrow."

This marks the first IL stint of any kind for Guerrero in his MLB career. He has played in at least 156 games in each of the past five seasons.

A lingering back injury has hindered Guerrero's play in 2026. The 27-year-old is only hitting .263/.337/.356 with seven homers in 115 games.

McAdoo and Kazuma Okamoto could both get time at first base until Guerrero is able to return.

The Blue Jays are 9-5 so far in August and have clawed their way back into the wild-card race despite still being four games under .500. They enter play on Saturday one game behind the Detroit Tigers for the final playoff spot in the AL.
