Diana Taurasi Hopes to Join Mercury Ownership Group After 2025 WNBA Retirement

Paul KasabianAug 14, 2026

Phoenix Mercury legend Diana Taurasi wants to join her former team's ownership group within the next year or two, per comments made to ESPN's Josh Weinfuss on Friday.

"Ownership is always something that's always been on my mind," Taurasi said. "So, thankfully, I'm in a great place where it hopefully can evolve into something. But, I don't want to just do it and not be around. When I do it, I want to be around because I want to have an influence on where this franchise goes. And obviously being in Phoenix would be the goal."

Taurasi made her comments on Friday after the Phoenix Suns/Phoenix Mercury Foundation and the city of Phoenix refurbished three basketball courts in honor of her in advance of the Mercury retiring her number and putting the guard in the franchise's Ring of Honor on Sunday, when the team hosts the Portland Fire.

Mat Ishbia holds a controlling interest in the Mercury and Phoenix Suns after his estimated $4 billion purchase in 2023.

Taurasi, the league's all-time leading scorer, is a three-time WNBA champion and 11-time All-Star. The 14-time All-WNBA player is also a six-time Olympic gold medalist. She played 20 WNBA seasons and retired in Feb. 2025.
