Finlay Tarling, a road racing cyclist from Great Britain, died at age 19 after an accident Friday at Volta a Portugal.

Tarling was involved in a serious accident during the eighth stage of the race, which runs from Melgaço to Fafe, according to race organizers.

"Fin was a much loved member of our team but most importantly, he was a son, a brother, and a friend to so many. He will be deeply missed," Tarling's team NSN Cycling said in a statement.

"Our deepest condolences go out to Fin's parents Michael and Dawn, his brother Josh, and everyone who was lucky enough to call Fin a friend. Rest in peace, Fin."

According to The Times' Sean Russell, Portugal's state-owned broadcaster RTP "said Tarling was hit by a non-race car driving in the opposite direction."

Volta a Portgual runs from Aug. 5 to Aug. 16 on a 860-mile route from Lisbon to Porta.

Organizers said the race would be neutralized until the event reaches Fafe at the end of the eighth stage. A podium ceremony scheduled for Friday will also be cancelled.

Tarling signed with NSN Cycling's development team as a time trial specialist in 2024 ahead of the 2025 and 2026. His older brother Josh Tarling has competed as a professional cyclist since 2023 with Netcompany Ineos.
