New MLB Rumors Reveal Mets' Interest in Japanese Star amid Yankees, Dodgers, Phillies Links

With NPB star Teruaki Sato seemingly heading to MLB next season, the New York Mets have joined the list of clubs expected to have interest in the 27-year-old.

According to Jon Heyman of the New York Post, the Mets have been scouting Sato and could sign him to fill their void at first base.

Heyman also cited the New York Yankees, Los Angeles Dodgers and Philadelphia Phillies as teams expected to have interest in Sato.

ESPN's Jorge Castillo reported in March that MLB teams were "preparing" for Sato to make the move from Japan after the 2026 season. He has spent his entire NPB career with the Hanshin Tigers since making his debut in 2021.

Heyman noted scouts described Sato's defense at third base as "questionable," but they like the "good pop" in his bat.

Bo Bichette is the starting third baseman for the Mets and presumably won't exercise his opt-out clause amid his struggles in 2026. He will make $55.3 million next season on his current contract.

Mark Vientos has been a huge disappointment trying to replace Pete Alonso at first base. He is hitting .211/.256/.388 in 73 games this season and is currently on the injured list with a fractured hand.

If Sato wants to at least try staying at third base in MLB, the Phillies or Yankees would be his best bet to get a shot. Alec Bohm is set to become a free agent after this season for Philadelphia.

Ryan McMahon is owed $16 million next season in the final year of his contract, but the Yankees would presumably like more offensive punch from the hot corner than he has provided since being acquired from the Colorado Rockies.

Sato is a four-time All-Star and was named Central League MVP in 2025 after hitting .277/.345/.579 with 40 homers in 139 games. He is on pace to set career-highs in the triple-slash categories with a .317/.404/.622 line in 103 games so far in 2026.
