Patriots' Christian Gonzalez Was 'Physically Unavailable' for Practice amid Contract Rumors

New England Patriots head coach Mike Vrabel explained Thursday why star cornerback Christian Gonzalez was absent from a joint practice on Tuesday.

Speaking to reporters after the Pats' 13-13 tie with the Indianapolis Colts in their preseason opener, Vrabel said, "Christian was unavailable, physically unavailable for the practice. That's the clarification. Just like other players that I told to have treatment, and everybody has a plan here, there were other guys that were in that same category. If you want to list the names, Christian Elliss, Brenden Schooler, Harold Landry, Christian Barmore, et cetera. So make sure they're all included. They were all in the same group of what they did."

Gonzalez, who also sat out Thursday's preseason game, is known to be seeking a new contract leading up to the start of the 2026 NFL regular season.

Last month, Patriots owner Robert Kraft told reporters that the team made Gonzalez an offer that would make him the highest-paid cornerback in NFL history.

Selected 17th overall by the Patriots in the 2023 NFL draft out of Oregon, Gonzalez has been even better than advertised.

Over his three NFL seasons, Gonzalez has been the linchpin of New England's secondary, and he played a key role in the Pats reaching the Super Bowl last season, recording seven passes defended and one interception in four playoff games.

After an injury limited Gonzalez to just four games as a rookie, he bounced back to record 59 tackles, 11 passes defended and two interceptions in 2024, earning him Second Team All-Pro honors.

Last season, Gonzalez was named a Pro Bowler for the first time despite not reeling in an interception, as he had 69 tackles and 10 pass breakups in 14 games.

Gonzalez has two years left on his rookie deal since the Patriots exercised the fifth-year option in his contract for 2027, but he is looking for a longer-term commitment.

There is no indication that he plans to sit out if he and the Pats are unable to reach an agreement before the start of the regular season, and Vrabel's comments on Thursday suggested that Gonzalez's absence from practice was not related to his contract status.

Given Gonzalez's importance to the team and his role in making New England one of the best defensive squads in the NFL, all signs point toward a deal getting done eventually, even if it isn't over the next few weeks.
