Hunter Greene Undergoes Tommy John Surgery, Reds Drop Updated Injury Return Timeline

Cincinnati Reds starting pitcher Hunter Greene underwent Tommy John surgery on Wednesday, according to Gordon Wittenmyer of the Cincinnati Enquirer.

Per Wittenmyer, Greene will take between 12 and 18 months to recover and is set to miss the entire 2027 season.

Reds president of baseball operations Nick Krall previously announced that the right-hander would have season-ending elbow surgery to repair a partially torn ligament.

It marks Greene's second Tommy John surgery, as he previously underwent the procedure while playing in the minor leagues in 2019.

He also missed the first three months of the 2026 season while recovering from arthroscopic surgery that removed bone chips and loose bodies in his elbow.

Greene eventually returned and started five games, although he dealt with inconsistency on the mound. He allowed at least four earned runs in three of his five starts, compiling a 6.83 ERA.

While Greene has spent time on the injured list during each season of his MLB career, he still developed into a crucial piece of Cincinnati's pitching staff from 2024-25.

Over those two seasons, he owned a 16-9 record in 45 starts to go along with a 2.76 ERA and 0.984 WHIP. Greene racked up 301 strikeouts in 258 innings of work across that span, earning an All-Star nod in 2024.

Now, the Reds will continue to rely on Chase Burns to lead their rotation for the remainder of the 2026 season as well as their 2027 campaign.

Cincinnati currently holds the No. 4 spot in the National League Central standings with a 57-62 record, sitting 5.5 games back of the final NL Wild Card spot.
