Nick Kyrgios Fined for Stan Wawrinka Insult: Latest Details, Comments, Reaction

Matt FitzgeraldAug 13, 2015

Stan Wawrinka reportedly confronted Nick Kyrgios in the locker room after the young tennis star claimed that Thanasi Kokkinakis had slept with the Swiss player's girlfriend during their Rogers Cup match on Wednesday.

Kyrgios received a fine for his taunt, and the ATP later released details from its investigation.

ATP Completes Investigation of Kyrgios' Actions

Monday, Aug. 24

"The ATP has imposed a further fine of US$25,000 as well as a suspension for a period of 28 days from any ATP-sanctioned event," the ATP announced, before adding:

"

However, the fine and suspension are withheld on the condition that, over the next six-month period, ending 24 February 2016, the player:

1) does not incur any fines for verbal or physical abuse at any ATP sanctioned tournament, or;

2) does not accumulate fines totalling more than US$5,000 for any other offences at ATP sanctioned tournaments.

Once the player has met those conditions the penalties will be formally dismissed. If the conditions are not met the penalties will be invoked after any appeals process is exhausted.

Wawrinka Sparked Locker Room Row, Says Kyrgios' Brother

Friday, Aug. 14

"He put his hands on Nick—grabbed him and said a whole bunch of abusive s--t," wrote Christos Kyrgios, Nick's brother, in a now-deleted Facebook post, relayed by Telegraph.

"I've studied law and that s--t is abuse bro. Lucky we aren't pressing charges," he added in the post-match comment. "The p---k is lucky I wasn't there or he would have been withdrawing from the next few tournaments."

Wawrinka was clearly angered by Kyrgios' insult and took to Twitter after Wednesday's match to express his displeasure.

"So disappointing to see a fellow athlete and colleague be so disrespectful in a way I could never even imagine," said Wawrinka during a string of tweets.

Kyrgios continued his apology on Friday, sending out a statement which read: "I apologize to Donna Vekić and her family, as well as Thanasi Kokkinakis and his family for dragging them into something that wasn't deserved for them."

Kyrgios Apologises for Kokkinakis Comment, ATP to Review Incident

Thursday, Aug. 13

Kyrgios received a $10,000 penalty for his unsavory remark and may face further trouble, reported by Sportsnet's Arash Madani on Thursday:

Kyrgios issued a public apology on Facebook earlier in the day and explained therein that he'd reached out to Wawrinka in private about the situation.

Wawrinka retired from the match down 4-0 in the third set after winning the first in a tiebreaker 10-8 and losing the second to Kyrgios 6-3.

Andrew Voss of Fox Sports was among those critical of Kyrgios' verbal shot at Wawrinka:

This episode is most embarrassing for Kyrgios, who carries a reputation with him already and won't win over any new fans. Earlier this year at Wimbledon, Kyrgios was accused of tanking a match in losing to Richard Gasquet.

Trips to the quarterfinals at Wimbledon in 2014 and the Australian Open this season confirm the 20-year-old Kyrgios is a supreme talent to watch. His attack-mode style of tennis and raw skills could take him close to the top of the game.

But life on the ATP World Tour could prove tough for the young Kyrgios because of this self-inflicted adversity. Should he mature more quickly as a result, perhaps Kyrgios' unfortunate moment will be viewed in a different light down the road.

Right now, this controversy is a bad look that shows the mental side of his game has a way to go to catch up with his physical tools.
