The quarterback will be the ninth person to be inducted into the franchise's Ring of Honor, joining owner Tom Benson, kicker Morten Andersen, guard Jahri Evans, linebacker Rickey Jackson, quarterback Archie Manning, linebacker Sam Mills, tackle William Roaf and defensive end Will Smith.
"It will be a privilege to recognize Drew as a member of our Ring of Honor in October," Saints executive vice president and general manager Mickey Loomis said in the announcement. "Drew's production and character both on and off the field sets him apart as the greatest Saint ever. This is a great opportunity for our organization and our fan base to show appreciation for his Hall of Fame career."
While Brees started his NFL career with the San Diego Chargers as a second-round pick in the 2001 NFL draft, he played his final 15 seasons with the Saints where he enjoyed his greatest on-field accomplishments.
He quickly became synonymous with the franchise and a fan favorite, and he discussed his love for the city and the city's response to him in his Hall of Fame speech.
"New Orleans," he said. "You accepted me, you embraced me, you believed in me, but more importantly, you trusted me with the soul of the city and I would have died to protect that calling."
Most notably, he led the Saints to their only Lombardi Trophy title during the 2009 season as the Super Bowl XLIV MVP. In all, his NFL resume includes that Super Bowl title, two Offensive Player of the Year awards, 13 Pro Bowl nods, seven seasons when he led the league in passing yards and four seasons when he led the league in passing touchdowns.
Brees is second all-time in passing yards and passing touchdowns in NFL history behind the great Tom Brady and will forever be remembered as one of the best players to ever take the field.
And the Saints are honoring him accordingly.
