8 Top Records Ready to be Broken This NFL Season

Records were made to be broken, but some have become a little more vulnerable than the rest on the brink of the 2026 NFL season. 

Every year, some major and minor records come under threat. And every year, at least a few are rewritten. 

This year, we're keeping our eye on the following eight records in particular.

Patrick Mahomes: Fastest to 300 Career Regular-Season Touchdown Passes

Patrick Mahomes

Current Record: Aaron Rodgers (300 in 144 games)

What Must Be Done: Mahomes, who currently has 267 career touchdown passes in 126 games, needs 33 this season to hit 300 in 143 games or fewer. 

Will It Happen?: Mahomes looks to be well on track to start Week 1 as he completes his recovery from a major knee injury, but he hasn't thrown 33-plus touchdown passes in a single season since 2022. So he's got his work cut out for him. 

Worth Noting: Mahomes already stands as the fastest quarterback to 300 total passing touchdowns when including the postseason (accomplished in 138 combined games).

Brock Purdy: Career Passer Rating

Brock Purdy

Current Record: Lamar Jackson and Aaron Rodgers (both at 102.2)

What Must Be Done: Purdy, who currently has a 104.0 career rating, needs to stay above Jackson and Rodgers until he has thrown his 1,500th career pass to officially qualify for the record. 

Will It Happen?: Very likely. The 26-year-old is only 147 pass attempts short of that mark, so he'd really have to struggle in the first half of the season to fall below those two guys. 

Worth Noting: This isn't a milestone-based record, so Purdy can break it and then hand it back quite quickly to Jackson, Rodgers or someone else (Joe Burrow is also in the mix at 101.1).

Bijan Robinson: Single-Season Yards From Scrimmage

Current Record: Chris Johnson (2,509 in 2009)

What Must Be Done: The 24-year-old Robinson, who led the NFL with 2,298 scrimmage yards last season, would have to increase his yards-per-game total from 135.2 to 147.7 and play all 17 games. 

Will It Happen?: It's certainly a strong possibility considering Robinson's abilities as a rusher and receiver. He's ascending, he could benefit from better quarterback play with Tua Tagovailoa coming in to compete with Michael Penix Jr., and Kevin Stefanski could bring out the best in his first-team All-Pro running back. 

Worth Noting: Robinson's 2025 total of 2,298 was the best in the NFL this decade, beating out Saquon Barkley (2,283 in 2024). 

Puka Nacua or Ja'Marr Chase: Single-Season Receptions

Current Record: Michael Thomas (149 in 2019)

What Must Be Done: Nacua, who averaged 8.06 catches per game while registering a league-high 129 receptions in 2025, would need to increase that rate to 8.82 across a full 17-game slate. Chase, who averaged 7.8 per game last year and has caught 125-plus passes in back-to-back seasons, obviously has the same task. 

Will It Happen?: It won't be easy for either, but a full season from Joe Burrow combined with missed time for Tee Higgins could get Chase there based on sheer volume. Ditto for Nacua if Davante Adams isn't as present as he's been in the past. 

Worth Noting: Cooper Kupp fell just short of this record with 145 receptions in Sean McVay's offense in 2021. 

Myles Garrett: Single-Season Sacks (Again)

Current Record: Garrett (23.0 in 2025)

What Must Be Done: In a new setting with more support, Garrett would need to leapfrog himself as a Ram.

Will It Happen?: It's unlikely. Keep in mind that 12 of his 23 sacks came in one wild four-game stretch last year. That isn't easy to duplicate, and we're talking about a 30-year-old with a huge target on his back. That was actually Garrett's first-ever season with more than 16 sacks, so it may be an outlier. Then again, he may just be taking his game to another level entirely. 

Worth Noting: Garrett still shares the all-time unofficial record with Al Baker (1978), as sacks weren't an official stat until 1982. 

Denver Broncos: Single-Season Team Sacks

Nik Bonitto

Current Record: Chicago Bears (72 in 1984)

What Must Be Done: A Broncos team that put up 63 sacks in 2024 and 68 in 2025 needs to continue that exact trajectory in 2026 to hit 73. 

Will It Happen?: It definitely could, as Vance Joseph's core remains in place and the schedule is far from daunting. 

Worth Noting: Ten games into the 2025 campaign, the Broncos were on pace for exactly 73 sacks. They recorded just seven in their final three road games, which made it difficult to maintain that clip. 

Jayden Daniels: Single-Season Rushing Yards by a Quarterback

Current Record: Lamar Jackson (1,206 in 2019)

What Must Be Done: Daniels, who rushed for 891 yards in his first and only healthy season, would have to increase his per-game average from 52.4 in 2024 to 71.0 in 2026. 

Will It Happen?: The odds are not in his favor because it would require quite an overall per-game uptick as well as good health throughout the season. New offensive coordinator David Blough's system might contain fewer designed quarterback runs, but don't let that fool you as that dynamic could lead to more home-run scrambles. 

Worth Noting: Daniels averaged 75.3 rushing yards per game in the final four weeks of his rookie campaign. 

Travis Kelce: All-Time Playoff Receiving Yards

Current Record: Jerry Rice (2,245)

What Must Be Done: Kelce, who sits second of all time at 2,078, needs 168 yards in the 2026 playoffs to surpass the legendary Rice. 

Will It Happen?: It all depends on what a 37-year-old Kelce has left, as well as how much success the Chiefs can have as they attempt to bounce back and extend their dynasty this year. Kelce did compile 175 yards in the 2024 playoffs, but 117 of those came in his first postseason game, after which he was hardly a factor in the next two. That was also two years ago. 

Worth Noting: Rice played 29 career playoff games, while Kelce has played in 25 to date.
