Red Sox Manager Chad Tracy Talks 'Strange' Play That Led to 16-Minute Delay in Loss to Blue Jays

The Boston Red Sox suffered their third straight loss in Monday night's matchup against the Toronto Blue Jays, and interim manager Chad Tracy called out a peculiar moment in the game.

The Red Sox scored their only run of the 2-1 loss to the Blue Jays on a bizarre inning-ending double play in the seventh. Per ESPN, the scoreboard erroneously showed two outs when Ceddanne Rafaela hit a fly ball to center field, and Anthony Seigler scored from third base without ever tagging up. Nick Sogard was doubled up after leaving first base to end the inning, but the confusion continued.

The umpires came together to discuss the situation and consulted with MLB's replay center in New York for a rules check. After a 16-minute delay, Boston was awarded a run because Seigler crossed home plate before Sogard was called out at first, and Toronto never appealed the runner leaving third base early.

After the game, Tracy summed up the situation as "strange" and something that he's never experienced before.

"We gotta know there's one out, regardless of what's on the board or not," Tracy said. "But, to your point, yes, it was a weird, very weird situation, where the players on both sides seemed to be confused on the outs."

Prior to their three-game skid, the Red Sox had won nine straight games, so they will try to return to their winning ways when they meet the Blue Jays for Game 2 of their four-game series on Tuesday night.
