Adley Rutschman Nearing Red Sox Debut, Latest Injury Update, Timeline on Catcher After Orioles Trade

The Boston Red Sox's new catcher could make his debut this week.

Per Christopher Smith of Mass Live, Adley Rutschman will travel with the team to Toronto this week and will work out at Rogers Centre on Monday. The Red Sox will then decide if he can come off the injured list for Tuesday's game.

"Hit BP, do all the work," interim manager Chad Tracy said. "Make sure that he comes out of all that OK, and we'll assess him after that."

The Red Sox acquired Rustchman at last week's deadline from the Orioles in a deal that sent a handful of top prospects to Baltimore.

The haul included right-handed pitcher Anthony Eyanson (No. 2), right-handed pitcher Kyson Witherspoon (No. 4), outfielder Enddy Azocar (No. 5) and outfielder Harold Rivas (No. 17), who were among Boston's top 30 prospects, per MLB.com.

"We didn't want to go through a deadline where we kind of just rearranged the chairs, but didn't actually get better and introduce the possibility of messing with the culture and the environment," chief baseball officer Craig Breslow told reporters when discussing the trade.

"We were aggressive in bringing players in, and we were positioning ourselves to reach our objective, which is to try and win a World Series."

Rustchman is a three-time All-Star, including this year, but injuries have limited him to just 67 games in 2026. He's been on the injured list three times this year, most recently with left wrist inflammation, which has kept him out since July 18.

According to Smith, Rustchman played in rehab games on Saturday and Sunday with Triple-A Worcester.

The 28-year-old has hit eight home runs and 47 RBI while slashing .251/.331/.433 this season.

When healthy, Rustchman is an average hitter who is tremendous behind the plate, and the Red Sox hope he can be the missing piece that can take them to a World Series.

Boston had a disastrous start to the season, but won 15 consecutive games to get back in postseason position. A nine-game winning streak to start August has the Red Sox sitting 5.5 games ahead in the wild-card race.
