Analysis

In the American League, both the Central and West divisions are wide open, and claiming the top spot is vital, with the Yankees and Red Sox running away with two of the Wild Card berths. At this point, it would be pretty surprising if the American League representative in the World Series didn't come out of the East.

The National League is less intriguing from a divisional crown standpoint, with perhaps only the Brewers facing a threat from the second-place Cubs. Both the Braves and Dodgers look safe atop their perches in the East and West, respectively.

The Cubs look safe in the top spot for the Wild Card race but it gets interesting from there, with the Phillies and Diamondbacks holding onto the next two spots by just 1.5 games. The San Diego Padres have been disappointing all season but added Casey Mizeย andย Robbie Ray to a rotation in desperate need of help at the trade deadline, and we know the star power already in place.

Neither the Phillies or D-Backs are likely feeling all that safe in their Wild Card positioning, in other words.
