Sophie Cunningham Talks DiJonai Carrington Ejection, Confrontation After Hard Foul During Fever-Sky

Indiana Fever guard Sophie Cunningham discussed the Flagrant 2 foul she received from Chicago Sky guard DiJonai Carrington as well as their subsequent altercation during a matchup between the two teams on Saturday.

"I wasn't even upset," Cunningham said after the game, per ESPN's Kareem Copeland. "I mean, I popped up. I'm not going to let anyone just do that to me. I think everyone knows that. I think that's why she did it because she wants attention. I mean, s--t, like, people have started craving attention. Like, go get it somewhere else. Go do something good in the world, I don't know. Yeah, I popped up and KK had my back."

Carrington, for her part, has Chicago's next matchup with the Fever bookmarked on her schedule:

Carrington's arm hit Cunningham in the side of the head as she went up for a layup in the first quarter of the contest, resulting in the flagrant foul and an ejection.

Crew chief Maj Forsberg explained why the play was ruled a Flagrant 2 in the pool report following the contest.

"The criteria for the flagrant foul penalty 2 was met since the contact was deemed unnecessary and excessive to a player in a vulnerable position," Forsberg said.

Fever head coach Stephanie White agreed with the decision.

"It was a hard foul," White said after the game, per the Associated Press. "I don't think that DiJonai intentionally came out to get her across the neck like she did, but it did happen, and I thought it was the right call."

Carrington only played four minutes prior to the ejection, while Cunningham was on the floor for 17 minutes off the bench. She scored three points and recorded two steals, shooting 1-of-3 from the field.

Indiana ultimately secured a 90-86 win, improving to 20-12 on the season.

Cunningham has primarily operated as a reserve for the Fever during her 2026 campaign, averaging 9.1 points and 2.3 rebounds in 23.2 minutes per game while compiling 47.7/44.8/88.9 shooting splits heading into Saturday's action.

As for Carrington, she's appeared in just five games this season due to a left foot sprain. She's recording 9.8 points and 2.2 rebounds per game, shooting 48.4 percent from the field and 44.4 percent from three-point territory.
