Yankees Broadcaster Michael Kay Talks Mocking Red Sox Fans Prior to Team's Historic Run

Despite the Boston Red Sox' recent surge up the standings over the past month, New York Yankees play-by-play announcer Michael Kay is standing by comments he made back in June.

On June 26, the Yankees were 48-31 and in first place in the American League East, while the Red Sox were 15.5 games behind them in last place in the AL East with a 32-46 mark.

Despite that, Red Sox fans at Fenway Park chanted, "Yankees suck," during a game between the two rivals, and Kay questioned the logic behind it on the YES Network broadcast (h/t Matt Clapp of Awful Announcing), saying, "It's really strange, the crowd chanting that old chant they have here. I guess the standings on the left-field board, they can't see those."

Given that Boston has won nine games in a row and 32 of its past 37 to move into third place in the AL East, just a half-game behind the Yankees, Kay's June comments have now become a rallying cry of sorts among Red Sox fans.

Even so, Kay made clear Friday on the Michael Kay Show (h/t Boston Strong on X) that he does not regret what he said over a month ago.

"People are saying, 'I bet you wish you didn't say that.' I don't wish it at all," Kay said. "When I said it, it was true. And the funny part is the Red Sox fans that wanna jump on me now ... you all hated this team. Every single one of you. And it was just Pavlovian, you chanting, 'Yankees suck.' You knew they didn't suck, and you knew that your team at that time did.

"You wanted [chief baseball officer] Craig Breslow gone, you were printing up T-shirts that John Henry has to sell the team. So please, don't do the revisionist history crap with me. 'Oh, Michael Kay must look foolish now.' No I don't! At the time I was dead right. I wouldn't say it now because it's not true now. But back then, you guys sucked."

Kay was given a bit of a reprieve from the criticism on Friday night, as the Yankees narrowly avoided being overtaken in the standings by the Red Sox.

After Boston's 13-1 win over the Athletics, the Yankees entered the ninth inning trailing the Atlanta Braves 2-0. However, they tied the game in the ninth and won 3-2 in extra innings to stay a half-game ahead of the Sox.

However, with key players such as outfielders Aaron Judge and Clay Bellinger, designated hitter Giancarlo Stanton and starting pitcher Carlos Rodón all still on the injured list, it is fair to wonder how much longer the Yanks can hold off the Red Sox.

If and when Boston passes the Bronx Bombers in the standings, the trolling of Kay only figures to get even louder despite his view of the situation.
