New Hunter Greene Injury Update Reveals Reds Star's Status Amid Elbow Issue

Cincinnati Reds president of baseball operations Nick Krall revealed that star pitcher Hunter Greene is set to undergo season-ending elbow surgery on a partially torn ligament, per Brittany Ghiroli of The Athletic.

"They're going to go in there, find out what it is and go from there," Krall said. "The ligament was failing. It's going to be some sort of procedure around the ligament."

Greene's 2027 outlook following the surgery is unknown, per Ghiroli.

On Wednesday, the Reds placed the right-hander on the 15-day injured list due to right elbow soreness.

He missed the first three months of his 2026 campaign after undergoing arthroscopic surgery to remove bone chips and loose bodies in his elbow.

Krall said Friday that the Reds weren't sure if the bone chip procedure affected the ligament, as it was in good condition in the spring (via Ghiroli).

Greene eventually made his season debut on July 4, but struggled when available.

In five starts, he compiled a 2-2 record to go along with a 6.83 ERA and 1.373 WHIP. Opposing hitters owned a .261 batting average against him.

It marked a step down from Greene's productive 2024 and 2025 seasons, boasting a 2.76 ERA while averaging 10.5 strikeouts per nine innings across both years. He also earned an All-Star nod in 2024.

The Reds will now finish the 2026 season without Greene, as they currently sit at No. 4 in the National League Central standings with a 56-58 record.
