Listen to Substitute Teacher's Viral Phillies Play-by-Play Call in Video After $22K Charity Auction

Anyone who has ever tried to step in front of a microphone knows how intimidating that experience can be, but a Philadelphia-area substitute teacher made it look rather easy when he got to call an inning in the radio booth for the Phillies.

Lewis Kalb, who won a charity auction to be a guest announcer for Wednesday's game between the Phillies and Washington Nationals, nailed the assignment with his performance.

The experience was up for bids as part of the Phillies Phantastic Auction to benefit the team's charity. As of June 4, the auction had raised more than $417,000 with $22,010 coming from Kalb for the "Live Broadcast an Inning on the Radio with the Phillies Broadcasters."

Kalb worked the booth with Phillies announcers Scott Franzke and Larry Andersen for the third inning. His voice and delivery suggest someone who has been training for this moment his entire life, in part because he has.

Speaking to Alex Coffey of the Philadelphia Inquirer, Kalb said he used to drive across California in his 20s listening to Vin Scully call Dodgers games on the radio.

"I would say, 'Well, you've wanted to do this since age 12,'" Kalb said. "You can't wait too much longer. Now I'm 27, 28 years old. So, if you're going to pursue it, if you're going to give it a shot, that's the time to do it."

Coffey added Kalb enrolled in broadcasting classes at Penn State in 1980 and later did freelance work in Philadelphia for WFAN and in New York with WNAW.

Even though Kalb got to experience his dream, the Phillies were unable to make it a perfect day for him because they lost 10-4 to the Nationals.
