George Lombard Jr. Talks Historic Yankees Debut As He, Brother Jacob Hit Home Run on Same Night

New York Yankees rookie shortstop George Lombard Jr. reflected on hitting a home run in only his second career MLB plate appearance on Tuesday night against the St. Louis Cardinals.

Speaking to reporters after his MLB debut, Lombard said, "It was probably a moment, a swing, a day I won't forget."

Making the day even more special, Lombard's younger brother Jacob Lombard also homered in his first career professional game on Tuesday.

Jacob, who was selected 14th overall by the Miami Marlins in the 2026 MLB draft, went yard for the Jupiter Hammerheads against the Cards' Single-A affiliate, the Palm Beach Cardinals.

Lombard Jr. discussed what it meant to him to share the spotlight with his brother, saying, "I haven't talked to him yet, but I heard. It's pretty awesome. I mean, it's probably awesome for my parents. I would bet they were watching the game on their phones. I was really excited for them too."

The Yankees called Lombard up to the majors this week following the trade deadline, and they sent down another former highly touted prospect in shortstop Anthony Volpe in order to do so.

Lombard, who is ranked by MLB.com as the Yankees' No. 1 prospect and the No. 20 overall prospect in baseball, earned the call-up with his play at the minor-league level this season.

In 78 games across Rookie Ball, Double-A and Triple-A, Lombard slashed .284/.411/.498 with 12 home runs, 33 RBI and 14 stolen bases.

He added a much-needed power and speed threat to a Yankees lineup that has been ravaged by injuries, as Aaron, Judge, Giancarlo Stanton and Cody Bellinger are all on the injured list.

Lombard injected some hope into the Yankees' fanbase after the disappointment of not landing a catcher or reliever at the trade deadline, and his addition to the lineup could be a true difference-maker in the wide-open American League as the playoffs approach.
