Adley Rutschman Learned of Red Sox-Orioles Trade While Going to Movie, Reaction Revealed

Imagine going into The Odyssey or Spider-Man as a member of one team and leaving the movie as a member of another.

Adley Rutschman doesn't have to imagine.

The Baltimore Orioles traded the catcher to the Boston Red Sox ahead of Monday's deadline, and Baltimore outfielder Colton Cowser revealed Tuesday he and Rutschman were walking into a movie when they learned of the move.

"The initial shock of it was something that was tough to see," Cowser said, per Matt Weyrich of the Baltimore Sun.

Jacob Calvin Meyer of the Baltimore Sun added:

Baltimore landed quite the haul in return for Rutschman and fellow catcher Jake Rogers. Boston sent highly regarded prospects in pitcher Anthony Eyanson, pitcher Kyson Witherspoon and outfielder Enddy Azocar, as well as catcher Carlos Narváez.

It was a high price to pay, but the Red Sox also needed more offensive consistency from the catcher spot than Narváez and Connor Wong have provided this season.

Rutschman can provide that needed boost, as he was an All-Star this season and finished in the top 10 in MVP voting in 2023.

He also joins a Red Sox team that is 23-3 in the last 26 games and in a wild-card position in the American League. That likely made the initial sting of learning about the trade while walking into a movie easier to deal with for the star catcher.
