Andrew McCutchen Released by Braves After Signing MiLB Contract in July

The Atlanta Braves are moving on from Andrew McCutchen.

Per Grant McAuley of 92.9 The Game, the Braves have released the veteran outfielder after he signed a minor league deal in July.

McCutchen joined the Texas Rangers on a minor league deal before the start of the season and made the team's Opening Day roster. He was designated for assignment and then released in May.

He went unsigned for more than a month before joining the Braves on a minor league deal. He appeared in nine games for Triple-A Gwinnett, slashing .333/.375/.908 with a home run and five RBI.

The 39-year-old McCutchen is far from the MVP version of himself at this point in his career, but he had posted solid numbers with the Pittsburgh Pirates last year. In 135 games, he had a .239 average with 13 home runs and 57 RBI.

He could be of help to a handful of teams looking for help against right-handed pitchers down the stretch. Perhaps entering free agency could give him the chance to return to the Pirates, where he had the best years of his career.

But it's fair to assume McCutchen could be facing a retirement decision following his release from the Braves. A 39-year-old like him isn't exactly coveted around baseball, and teams might pass on him completely with their rosters mostly established heading into the final stretch of the season.

If McCutchen has played his last game, it will have concluded a tremendous 18-year career.
