NFL Coach Sounds Off on J.J. McCarthy Amid Vikings QB Battle, 'Football Looks Hard For Him'

Andrew PetersAug 4, 2026

Through his first two NFL seasons, J.J. McCarthy has been nothing short of dissapointing.

Entering Year 3, the Minnesota Vikings quarterback is hoping to put together a strong season, but those around the league aren't confident in him. McCarthy ranked in Tier 5 in The Athletic's Mike Sando's quarterback tier, which is voted on by executives and coaches.

"Football looks hard for him," an offensive coach said, per Sando.

Before McCarthy can prove himself to the rest of the NFL, he must first prove himself to his own coaching staff. The former No. 10 overall pick is immersed in a quarterback battle with Kyler Murray, one that he reportedly is not winning.

"Kyler is viewed by many as the favorite to win this job," ESPN's Adam Schefter reported on the Pat McAfee Show on Tuesday.

After missing all of his rookie season, McCarthy threw for just 1,632 yards, 11 touchdowns and 12 interceptions in 10 games last year. The 23-year-old still has plenty of time to develop and establish himself as a starting-caliber quarterback, but it all starts with winning the quarterback battle.
