Jahmyr Gibbs' Lions Contract Talks Won't Be 'Hurt' by Bijan Robinson's Historic Deal, Campbell Says

Detroit Lions head coach Dan Campbell didn't shut down the idea that Bijan Robinson's historic extension with the Atlanta Falcons could speed up contract negotiations with Jahmyr Gibbs.

Gibbs is currently holding in from training camp amid his bid for a long-term deal with the Lions.

"It's certainly not gonna hurt. It's not gonna hurt. But we'll see," Campbell said Tuesday when asked if Robinson's deal could speed up Gibbs' negotiations (h/t ESPN's Eric Woodyard).

"Look, I'm anxious to get Gibbs back out there. Every day that goes by, that's another day that you feel like you miss with him, and getting out there with the guys, and him doing his part. But there again, it'll get done when it gets done."

The Falcons made Robinson the highest-paid running back in NFL history by signing him to a three-year extension worth up to $75 million, per ESPN's Adam Schefter.

The contract includes a base annual average salary of $22.25 million per year before incentives, per NFL Network's Ian Rapoport.

The deal also included $51 million in guaranteed money, $37 million of which Robinson received at signing, per Schefter.

The deal could impact both Gibbs and the Indianapolis Colts' Jonathan Taylor, who has said he isn't planning a hold-in while negotiating his own extension.

Gibbs has been attending training camp but not participating in Lions practice. Campbell has previously said Gibbs is dealing with a minor back injury amid his hold-in.

Both Robinson, the No. 8 pick of the 2023 draft, and Gibbs, who was selected four spots behind at No. 12, had two years remaining on their rookie deals heading into 2026.

Gibbs is set to make about $2.4 million more than Robinson on his rookie deal after earning a higher fifth-year option, per NBC Sports' Mike Florio.

Robinson's $22.25 million base annual salary will now serve as a benchmark for Gibbs, who could be seeking a base number closer to Robinson's max of $25 million annually.

Gibbs has earned Pro Bowl nods in each of his three NFL seasons and topped 1,200 rushing yards in each of his last two campaigns.

Reaching compromise with Gibbs will allow the Lions to keep him under contract for most of his 20's while ensuring he returns to participate in training camp in time to adjust to the scheme being installed by new offensive coordinator Drew Petzing.
