NFL Coach Rips Josh Allen's Fumble in Playoff Loss, 'One of the Worst Plays I've Ever Seen'

At least one NFL coach feels Buffalo Bills star Josh Allen can't be ranked as the best quarterback in football until he learns to improve his decision-making.

A coach speaking on an anonymous basis with The Athletic's Mike Sando pointed toward Allen's play in the Bills' divisional round loss to the Broncos last January as an example.

"Josh Allen, with under 30 seconds left in the half, runs for a meaningless 12-yard gain and fumbles and gives up a field goal in a playoff game to go behind two scores against Denver," the coach told Sando.

"Until he quits doing that, you can't rank him as the top quarterback. That is one of the worst plays I've ever seen. Cost them the game."

The Bills were trailing 17-10 with time expiring in the first half of the Jan. 17 playoff game when Allen decided to make a run for it.

He lost the ball after taking contact from the Broncos' Nik Bonitto. Denver retrieved the fumble and successfully kicked a field goal to make the score 20-10 at the break.

That wasn't the only significant turnover Allen committed in the loss. He threw an overtime pass that was picked off by the Broncos' Ja'Quan McMillian to set up Denver's game-winning drive.

Allen took the blame for the Bills' playoff elimination in an emotional postgame press conference.

The Bills have made some significant changes since then, including hiring head coach Joe Brady and overhauling the defense.

Brady told reporters Tuesday he felt the new defense has been challenging Allen in training camp because he doesn't yet know what to expect from his team's newest players.

The Bills could hope the opportunity for Allen to work against a fresh defense in practice will help the quarterback hone his decision-making ahead of a potentially deeper playoff run this winter.
