WNBA's Cleveland Sirens Unveil Name and Logo in Epic Reveal Video Ahead of 2028 Debut

Long live the Cleveland Sirens.

The WNBA's next expansion team rolled out its new name Tuesday. It was inspired by "Lake Erie's power and pull."

A lot of thinking went into not just the choice of the name but the logo.

"The design of the siren, she is moving forward, she is progressive," president of business operations Allison Howard told The Athletic's Sabreena Merchant. "That was also intentional because we believe the WNBA is moving forward, we believe women's sports is moving forward, and we believe Northeast Ohio is moving forward."

Many wondered whether Cleveland's ownership group would revive the Rockers. The Rockers were part of the WNBA when the league launched in 1997 but folded after the 2003 season.

The Portland Fire were reborn when the WNBA returned to Rose City, albeit with totally new branding.

Trademark issues may have complicated future usage of the Rockers name, though. Perhaps team owner Dan Gilbert simply wanted to start fresh when the Cleveland Rockers weren't around long enough or didn't achieve much to be fondly remembered.

Cleveland made a nod to the Rockers by saying the Sirens are playing "a different song… a louder one."

The Sirens represent a big divergence from the past, and the unique moniker should help Cleveland stand out within the WNBA. The Golden State Valkyries have had a ton of success leaning into their name.

Cleveland will make its return to the court in 2028.
