A.J. Brown Suffers Dislocated Thumb Injury, Updates on Patriots WR's Status from Training Camp

Joseph ZuckerAug 3, 2026

New England Patriots wide receiver A.J. Brown continued to practice Monday despite dislocating his thumb.

Brown told NFL Network's Mike Garafolo and Brian Baldinger he quickly popped his left thumb back into place because he didn't want to miss any reps. He said he dislocated the same thumb in college:

The injury doesn't appear to be too serious. Beyond the fact he kept training, Brown didn't have his left thumb wrapped up or placed in any protective gear. According to ESPN's Mike Reiss, team trainers taped the thumb when he was initially hurt and then got him back onto the field.

The Patriots might be more cautious at Tuesday's practice now that the three-time Pro Bowler publicly disclosed the situation. It's important for Brown to strengthen his on-field rapport with quarterback Drake Maye heading into the regular season but not at the risk of him getting a more serious injury.

The 29-year-old will obviously be a key piece of the aerial attack in 2026.

New England signed Romeo Doubs to a four-year, $68 million contract, and Kayshon Boutte had career highs in yards per catch (16.7) and touchdowns (six) a season ago. The team should have some solid wideout depth.

Brown was the No. 1 target that was clearly missing, though. The Pats will want him at 100 percent for Week 1 on Sept. 9.
